SPECIFICATION FOR HEAVY DUTY BURNT CLAY BUILDING BRICKS (IS-2180-1988)

GENERAL QUALITY

  • Bricks shall be free from cracks and flaws and nodules of free lime.
  • Bricks shall have smooth rectangular faces with sharp corners
  • Bricks shall be of uniform in colour and texture.
  • Bricks shall be manufactured either by extrusion or by pressing.
  • Two bricks when struck together shall emit a clear metallic ring sound.
  • When broken fractured surface of the brick shall show a uniformly dense structure, free from large voids, laminations and lime particles.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Compressive StrengthMinimum average compressive strength shall not be less than as mentioned in table below.When tested for any individual brick, shall not fall below the minimum average compressive strength specified for the corresponding class of brick by more than 20%.
Water AbsorptionShall not be more than 10% by weight
EfflorescenceShall have a rating of efflorescence not more than ‘Nil’
Bulk DensityShall not be less than 2.5 g/cm3.
